If your sewer system is blocked, chances are you're not the only one. In fact, blockages can happen to anyone, anywhere. Sewerage systems are designed to move sewage and rainwater away from populated areas, but they can also become overloaded and blockages can form.
The most common causes of sewer blockages are items that have been flushed down the toilet but haven't been removed properly (including hair, soap foam and other debris), fat or grease build-ups in the pipes below the street surface, tree roots that have grown into the sewers, and construction debris left over from building work. There are a number of things you can do to unblock a sewer:
Call a professional plumber to clear any blockages in your pipes before they become permanent. A professional will use special tools and know-how to remove obstructions quickly and safely.
Use a plunger to dislodge any accumulated material blocking your drain. If this doesn't work, try using a snake (a long piece of flexible tubing) to slide down the drain and clear any obstruction. Be sure to wear gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing when dealing with snakes or drains!
Try pouring a bucket of water down the drain followed by an ice cube; this will help break up any clogs. Don't pour oil or gas down the drain – these substances could create dangerous fumes if they reach the sewer system.
Clear any snow or ice from around your sewer pipes using a shovel, rake or a snow blower. This will help reduce the chance of blockages from accumulating.
Call your local council to report any blockages in your sewer system. Your council will then be able to clear the blockages and open up your sewer system to the public.
